Atlas to Accompany the
Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies
Instructions
on how to use this DVD:
Below these instructions
you will find a thumbnail representation of every page in the atlas. Linked
to that thumbnail representation is the full sized jpeg2 version of the map.
Clicking the thumbnail will open the jpeg2 image - but you
must install a jpeg2 viewer first. They are free. Follow
the instructions below:
The viewer you will be installing
is a stand alone image viewer called irfanview. This disk contains all the files
you will need to install this viewer on your Windows computer. Here are the
installation instructions.
1) Click on this link to
install the viewer: irfanview software. Depending
on the browser you are using, you may be able to run the installation program
directly, or it may prompt you to save the installation file to your local hard
drive first. If it does the latter, save it to a place on your hard drive where
you can find it (like the desktop) and then double click on the saved file to
begin the installation process. IMPORTANT: During the installation process,
it will ask you what file associations you wish to assign to the program and
it will give a big list. You want to check the box for JPEG2 files and only
that box.
2) Once you have finished
the installation process, you can delete the installation program from your
local hard drive.
3) You must next install
the plugins for irfanview. This lets the program understand how to interpret
jpeg2 files. Just click on this link to get started: irfanview
plugins. Install it like you did the main viewer software in the first step.
Be aware this this installation just copies files to your irfanview installation
location so it is a much quicker install than the first one.
4) Once you have completed
these tasks, you are ready to view the large size images. Just click on a thumbnail
below and it will open the software to allow you to examine the files in detail.
If you have any questions
on this installation, please contact
us and we will assist you.
Note: The viewer and plugins
are up to date as of April 2011. If you wish to learn more about the free irfanview
software, visit their website at http://www.irfanview.com/.
